Everything You Need to Know About the Swatch x OMEGA MoonSwatch "Mission to the Moon 1969" (Ref. SSX01B700)

On July 21, 1969, humanity took its biggest step ever when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Now, Swatch and OMEGA are celebrating that exact moment with what might be their most spectacular, thoughtful, and flat-out unique release yet: the MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon 1969.

If you think this is just another colorway in the bioceramic lineup, think again. This limited-edition drop is packed with actual vintage gold, incredible historical Easter eggs, and a brand-new digital application process that is already turning heads in the watch community. Let’s dive into all the details of a watch that is quite literally worth its weight in history.

Real 18K Gold Melted Down Straight From 1969

What sets the Mission to the Moon 1969 (Reference SSX01B700) completely apart from any other MoonSwatch is the gold. The dial, the hands, the crown, and the pushers are all crafted from OMEGA’s exclusive 18K Moonshine™ Gold.

The backstory here is where it gets truly magical. Swatch actually gathered old, authentic OMEGA spare parts dating all the way back to the 1969 era and melted them down right in their own foundry to create the Moonshine™ Gold for this watch. Even more poetic is the weight: the gold elements on each single watch weigh exactly 11 grams, which is a direct, playful nod to the Apollo 11 mission itself.

In a brilliant move, Swatch decided to have some fun with the pricing, basing it on historical math rather than today's gold market. Back in 1969, 11 grams of 18-karat gold would set you back 11 dollars. With the exchange rate at the time sitting at 4.31 CHF per dollar, that equaled roughly 48 Swiss Francs (CHF). Combining that 1969 gold value with the tribute, Swatch has set the retail price of this special edition at 500 CHF.

The Catch: You Have to Pass the "ESTA" Test to Get One

You won’t be able to just stroll into a Swatch store and pick this up on a whim. Because the watch is strictly limited to 1,969 individually numbered pieces, Swatch is launching a unique digital application process online called the Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application (ESTA)

Here is exactly how the release works:

  • The Application Window: It all happens digitally on swatch.com, opening on July 16, 2026, at 15:32 CEST and closing on July 21, 2026, at 23:59 CEST.
  • The Rules: Applicants have to answer 32 questions, mimicking the actual ESTA forms used for traveling to the US. Once you start, you have exactly 2 hours and 15 minutes to finish it, and only 1,969 lucky people worldwide will get the green light to purchase and pick up their piece at a designated Swatch store.

The Design & The Hidden Easter Eggs

The overall aesthetic is a direct tribute to OMEGA’s iconic solid gold Speedmaster from 1969, which was originally created to celebrate the success of the Apollo 11 mission. The 42mm case is made of matte black Bioceramic, which beautifully frames the vertically satin-brushed dial made of 18K Moonshine™ Gold. The recessed chronograph sub-dials feature black hands and Arabic numerals, while the gold-colored faceted indexes are finished with black lacquer on the inside. Framing the dial is a black bezel sporting a gold-colored tachymeter scale, protected by a scratch-resistant coating that gives it a gorgeous, high-gloss finish

The crystal is a curved bio-based material treated with a scratch-resistant coating, featuring that classic, hidden "S" engraved right in the center. The logos and typography on the dial also beautifully mirror OMEGA’s vintage styling.

If you flip the watch over, you’ll find two incredible details that make this edition feel incredibly special. First, each piece has its exact limited edition number engraved right onto the side of the case at the 9 o'clock position, highlighted with golden lacquer. Second, the battery door features a golden moon with a scratch-resistant coating, proudly displaying the date July 21, 1969 alongside the iconic human footprint—a nod to that historic first step in the Sea of Tranquility. To tie it all together, the watch comes mounted on a black rubber strap with a VELCRO® closure, where the underside features a gold-colored texture inspired by the surface of the moon.

The Spec Sheet (Ref. SSX01B700)

For the spec lovers out there, here is a quick look at the core numbers behind the watch:

  • The Premium Materials: Dial, hour/minute hands, crown, and pushers are made of OMEGA’s 18K Moonshine™ Gold (totaling 11 grams of gold), rated with a water resistance of 3 bar (30 meters) and strictly limited to 1,969 pieces.

The Verdict
